Maxis Wireless Broadband vs Celcom Wireless Broadband Review
I ‘ve just signed up both Maxis and Celcom wireless broadband
5 days ago (12-July-2010).
I need a mobile internet solution for a few months and not sure
if Maxis or Celcom wireless broadband is better, therefore just
sign up for both to test it out.
Here are my review and the packages I took:
1) Maxis 1.5GB lite wireless broadband package (RM48 per month)
2) Celcom 386kps wireless broadband package (RM68 per month)
Since I already have 2x 3G modems support up to 3.6mbps,
I just take the sim card only option.
Maxis and Celcom Wireless Broadband Comparisons:
Maxis Wireless Broadband 1.5GB lite package (sim card only)
Pro:
-Speed: Uncapped, support maximum 7.2 Mbps.
-Price: RM48 per month
-Contract period: no contract
-Activation fee: No activation fee for sim card only package
-Activation time: Instant activation and can start using the same day.
-Upgrade option: Yes, need to log on to your maxis account online (http://mylaunchpad.com.my)
Cons:
-Fair usage bandwidth: 1.5GB per month, if use more than 1.5GB, speed will reduced.
-Trial periods: No trial period if only get sim card without modem
Celcom 386kbps Wireless Broadband package (sim card only)
Pro:
-Fair usage bandwidth: 5GB per month , if use more than 5GB, speed will reduced.
-Trial periods: 7 days
-Contract period: no contract
-Activation fee: No activation fee for sim card only package
Cons:
-Speed: Maximum 386Kbps or 0.386Mbps.
-Price: RM68 per month
-Activation time: Need to wait 24 hours before you can use it.
My personal experience after 5 days of using both wireless broadband service:
Maxis Wireless Broaband
Using it at Sunway PJS9/1 area, I can get 0.5Mbps and latency about 180ms using speedtest.net
(Seri Kembangan Host).
However, speed drop to 0.1Mbps and latency of more than 700ms after few hours
because it is always connect to GPRS network.
I feedback my bad experience to Maxis using their online feedback form and
immediately get a call from Maxis the next day to find out more about my problem.
Also, they want to send technician to check out my problem.
Great to know that Maxis really listen and work on customer feedback.
Thumbs up for that.
On 3rd day, I have figured out to connect back to HSPDA mode by setting
my 3G modem to use only 3G network.
However, the average speed i get is o.4Mbps, still way way far from
7.2Mbps or 3.6Mbps as my 3G modem supported.
Maxis technicians came the 4th day to get some signal strength reading at
my location.
Celcom Wireless Broadband
I can only start using it the next day, which is exactly what the dealer told me.
So I am ok with that, i did able to connect to internet after 24 hours.
The speed I get is about 0.2-0.3Mbps using UMTS mode, which is about the
same as the package I sign up for -386kbps.
I can feel that internet surfing speed is slower than Maxis by browsing some
website.
Conclusion:
Wired broadband service such as Streamyx is still more stable and fast.
If I would choose between Maxis and Celcom for cheapest wireless broadband
package after 5 days testing, I will go for Maxis Wireless Broadband because it is
cheaper (RM48 a month) and surfing speed is faster than Celcom 384Kbps package.
Hope you enjoy reading my review and do post your comment based on your experience.
By the way, a tips for those using wireless broadband, turn off or disconnect your
connection if you are not using to save bandwidth.

just a few correction,
its a 384kbps, not 386kbps. secondly, u can purchase additional bandwidth if you exceed 5GB (celcom limit) simply by logon to their online customer service http://wsc.celcom.com.my the price is rm5 for additional 1GB, or rm20 for additional 5GB usage. its optional, if you dont want to purchase it just continue surfing at a capped speed until next billing cycle.

I’m currently using Celcom broadband. What the author mentioned is partly true. I said partly because i havent tried Maxis Broadband on my own. I quit Digi bb during early bb launching in Alor Setar due to BAD customer service. It took Digi 3 days and still failed upon 2ND time of my registration and i gaveup. Customer service via phone is not reliable and i lost rm200 for that matter( didn’t get refund although it’s their fault). My friend tried Maxis at the office and its quite fast. The scariest part is how fast the data flow like water. Need to remind you, we noticed that the data counter count very fast while the page is on the way loading up. Where as, any bb, letsay brand X, loading the same page while take less bit/byte but abit slower. So my main gripe now, is there any broadband reasonable enough? You take slow bb and your patience is tested. You take fast bb and the data counter counts like hell faster than the page loading up. I said this based on my observation pattern used by my friend at the office. If only the quota is lift up, it would make the competition among telco go crazier than the 6% service tax

I still yet to find good 3G /wireless broadband provider in Malaysia.
My wife got a free 10 days trial for maxis broadband lite package with modem during her birthday last month but we return it the next day as the connection is 3x-4x slower than our streamyx.
The whole Malaysia wifi project which supposed to complete last year just an another empty promise from the government. To add salt to the wound, we might need to pay the crazy 6% government service tax and GST tax.
3G broadband in Malaysia? Nah.. I rather go online wireless at mcdonald, star bucks and cafe as most of them offer free wifi now.
Forgot to mention, even mamak stall also offer free wifi.
So it is really a shame to current ruling government who promised the whole nation wifi years ago.
